Tjalle Groen, born in 1982 in the Netherlands, and currently residing in Ghent, Belgium, is an allround video artist. Rooted in the underground music scene, he has implemented the DIY mentality of this scene into his video art. In 2005 Tjalle graduated as a Bachelor in Multimedia (in Kortrijk Belgium), and in 2016 he finished a 2-year course for digital video producer at Syntrawest with the shortfilm “Het volle Glas”.
His style can be described as dark and fragmented, with a focus on atmospheric snapshots which join into a deranged hypnotic reality, embracing both the dark and lighter side of life.
Tjalle filmed and directed the live captation of dozens of concerts at concert venue “De Kreun” (now Wilde Westen), for artists like the Melvins, Liars, Thurston Moore and Savages and the Sonic City festival.
After directing and editing the music video “Icarus”, the Belgian sludge collective Darqo asked Tjalle to create a live visual experience for their “Nights in the Scullery” tour. Tjalle joined the band to perform the live visuals from 2017 onwards, making 2 more video clips and a new set of visuals for the “Dawn of the Meek” album and tour up to the end of the band in 2024. In 2018, there was a one-time collab with Albino Eyez for a live audiovisual show in Ypres (Belgium).
Tjalle has filmed, edited and directed several music videos for belgianBelgian artists, one of these, “The coronation of the Lizard” premiered on the big screen at Buda Arts Center in Kortrijk (BE).
For the arts festival 48h Neukölln (Berlin, Germany) in 2019, Tjalle created a video installation by the name of “Tomorrow we were looking at Rixdorf”, an exploration of his new surroundings after moving to Berlin. Looking at Rixdorf cut up into pieces, a visual study of how tomorrow has an impact on today.
Three individual films, created live during the festival, sharing the source footage but painting an entirely different picture. Each version was added to the continuous loop within the installation.
Belgian sound artist Surrounded By Giants composed the soundtrack for this installation.
With his latest work “In a valley of Green”, Tjalle goes back to the pure form of creating experimental film. The work is will be shown at Zomersalon 2025 at Kunsthal in Ghent, Belgium.
